Piezoelectric transducers are a type of electroacoustic transducer that convert the electrical charges produced by some forms of solid materials into energy. The word "piezoelectric" literally means electricity caused by pressure. An early application of piezo transducer technology occurred during World War I with the use of sonar, which used echoes to detect the presence of enemy ships. As time goes, there are many faults of piezo transducers that have happened. So how can we test piezo transducer is in good-quality?

1.How to test piezo transducer?

2.What are the conditions for piezo transducer’s testing?

3.How can we use piezo transducers correctly?

How to test piezo transducer?

One way to measure the efficiency of a piezoelectric transducer is to compare the amount of input energy versus output energy. In general, the greater the amount of output energy produced in relation to input energy, the greater the level of efficiency that is present.

A typical piezoelectric transducer test starts with basic physical size measurement, together with the following simple tests such as continuity, short circuit, and disconnection. Often simple electrical measurements of piezo transducers are performed to ensure that the device does not have any major defects after assembly. Then, perform functional tests of piezo transducers under environmental conditions, which usually involves measuring in air or water at a specified distance and reflecting the pulse-echo measurement of a predetermined target. Finally, put the piezo transducers in whatever environmental conditions they were designed for, and then test again.

Functional testing of piezo transducers includes driving the piezo transducer with sine waves, square waves, pulses or spikes according to the intended use. View pulse and return signals on an oscilloscope to make digital measurements and view the subjective "cleanliness" or "quality" of the waveform.

There are many parameter measurements for piezo transducer’s quality:

1.The own characteristics of piezo transducer, such as sensitivity, linearity, and repeatability errors are determined according to the calibration, using test standards and display instruments

2.Temperature drift and time drift of piezo transducers. The smaller is the better.

3.The frequency response of piezo transducers depends on the actual situation.

4.Shock resistance and vibration ability of piezo transducers are whether good or not.

5.How about the resistance to corrosion, temperature and humidity of piezo transducer.

6.If a piezo transducer is made into a unified signal transmitter, how about the signal stability and anti-interference.

What are the conditions for piezo transducer’s testing?

Dynamic Range: The dynamic range of the piezo transducer is the ratio between the high amplitude signal and the minimum amplitude signal so that the piezo transducer can be translated effectively. When the piezo transducer has a high dynamic range, it will be more precise and sensitive.

Repeatability: Repeatability is the ability of a piezo transducer to produce equal output once it is stimulated through a similar input.

Noise: The output of the piezo transducer will add some random noise. In electronic sensors, the resulting noise may be electronic noise due to the thermal effect of the charge in the circuit. Small signals are more likely to be damaged by noise than large signals.

Hysteresis: Under this attribute, the output of the piezo transducer not only depends on its current input, but also on its past input. For example, the actuator uses a gear train with a certain reaction force. When the direction of movement of the actuator is reversed, there will be a dead zone before the output of the actuator is reversed through the play between the gear teeth.

How can we use piezo transducers correctly?

Using a piezoelectric sensor is the simplest task, just connect the positive and negative terminals to the circuit and press the top of the piezo transducer. Due to mechanical pressure, it will generate a voltage at the output by pressing, which will be further fed into the circuit. You can simply connect the LED to the piezoelectric sensor as shown in the circuit below. Whenever you press the piezo transducer, the LED will flash.

Piezoelectric transducer is a typical self-generating sensor. It is a sensor whose conversion principle is the piezoelectric effect that generates electric charge on the surface of certain crystals after being forced. Some crystals, when subjected to an external force along a certain direction, polarization occurs inside, and charges of opposite signs are generated on two surfaces at the same time. When the external force is removed, it returns to an uncharged state. When the direction of the force changes, the polarity of the charge also changes, and the amount of charge produced by the crystal is proportional to the magnitude of the external force. The above phenomenon is called the positive piezoelectric effect. Piezoelectric transducer is mostly made of the positive piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials.
