Piezoelectric transducer is a sensor made of piezoelectric effect produced by certain dielectrics. The so-called piezoelectric effect refers to the phenomenon that certain dielectrics undergo deformation, including bending and stretching deformation, due to the polarization of internal charges when they are deformed by external forces in a certain direction. Piezoelectric transducer is a typical self-generating sensor. It is a sensor whose conversion principle is the piezoelectric effect that generates electric charge on the surface of certain crystals after being forced. Some crystals, when subjected to an external force along a certain direction, polarization occurs inside, and charges of opposite signs are generated on two surfaces at the same time. When the external force is removed, it returns to an uncharged state. When the direction of the force changes, the polarity of the charge also changes, and the amount of charge produced by the crystal is proportional to the magnitude of the external force. The above phenomenon is called the positive piezoelectric effect. Piezoelectric transducer is mostly made of the positive piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials.

What are the applications of piezo transducers?

Piezoelectric force transducer: Piezoelectric load cell is a sensor that uses piezoelectric elements to directly realize force-to-electricity conversion. In tension and compression applications, two or more quartz crystals are usually used as piezoelectric elements. It has rigidity, wide measuring range, high linearity and stability, and good dynamic characteristics. When a charge amplifier with a large time constant is used, quasi-static force can be measured.

Piezoelectric acceleration transducer: The piezoelectric element is generally composed of two piezoelectric elements. Plate a silver layer on the two surfaces of the piezoelectric sheet, and weld the output lead on the silver layer, or clamp a piece of metal between the two piezoelectric elements, the lead is welded to the metal sheet, and the other lead of the output end is directly connected to the transducer base. Place a mass with a larger specific gravity on the piezoelectric elements, and then use a hard spring, bolt, or nut to preload the mass. The entire assembly is mounted in a thick metal shell. In order to isolate any strain of the test piece from being transmitted to the piezoelectric element and avoid false signal output, it is generally necessary to thicken the base or choose a material with greater rigidity to make it.

How to make a piezo transducer?

Before starting, we shall prepare some things: piezo buzzer, 1-foot shielded audio cable, 1/4-inch audio jack, wire strippers, soldering iron.

A piezo transducer pickup is a fun and inexpensive way to record your acoustic guitar. The pickup is made out of a piezo buzzer element, which can be purchased at many electronics stores. The piezo buzzer's transducer element acts as a small microphone when wired correctly, transferring any sound into a usable electronic signal.

Use wire strippers to remove the rubber shielding from the ends of a 1-foot shielded audio cable. You should see a red wire, that is the signal wire and a black wire called the ground wire on the inside of the cable's shielded casing.

Weld the red wire to the center of the piezo buzzer transducer element. This is the part of the piezo transducer that detects sound. You should be careful not to bend, dent or otherwise harm the surface of the piezo element.

Weld the black wire to the outer brass surface of the transducer element. Be sure this wire and any solder used doesn't touch the inner surface of the transducer.

Mount the red wire at the other end of your audio cable to the signal tab on a 1/4-inch audio jack. Mount the black wire to the ground tab on the jack.

Plug a 1/4-inch guitar cable or other shielded audio cable into the 1/4-inch audio jack connected to the piezo transducer element. Place the piezo element inside an acoustic instrument through the sound hole. Plug into an amplifier or recorder and play away. If you've succeeded, you should hear the sound of your instrument through the amplifier.
